Questions from Picketts Lock

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Picketts Lock?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Ponders End station?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We know the hall is a busy route, so we keep it as clear as possible.

Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?

Often a mix works best. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We talk it through during the design visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?

Yes. It’s common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. We don’t move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

About our under-stairs storage in Picketts Lock

Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. We plan the storage around them, typically with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so you gain storage without losing access. If you’re not sure what’s under your stairs in Picketts Lock, we’ll look when we visit. Most enquiries start with a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter and an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Wherever your home in Picketts Lock sits in London’s mix of housing, there is often a corner or recess not doing much. That space can take fitted storage, laid out for what you need to keep. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Gas pipework, which needs an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Structural changes to the staircase itself

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Pull-out drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves

Is bespoke worth it?

Period walls are rarely flat, and floors are often out of level. Standard units show the gaps, and filler strips can only hide so much. We scribe each under-stairs cupboard to follow the walls and the stairs, and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why choose us

  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. First you let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them.
  2. At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage we have discussed, for you to read through.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Ask for a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • The internal fittings
  • Parking near your home
  • The width and height of the space
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

What to send when you get in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Examples of the look you’re after

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Storage in Picketts Lock homes: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Picketts Lock, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 27%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Picketts Lock is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Picketts Lock is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your children go to Delta Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live near Pymmes Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. Bruce Castle, about 2.6 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
