Loft storage in Picketts Lock
Loft storage in Picketts Lock: what you get
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Pull-out drawers mean you don’t have to crawl in. At the design visit in Picketts Lock, we will see what fits. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are an empty dormer that could hold shelves and a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised.
Whether your home in Picketts Lock is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, there is usually a space that could work harder. That space can take fitted storage, laid out for what you need to keep. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Plinths and scribe strips
Loft rooms are seldom square. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.
Pull-out drawers
Pull-out drawers bring the back of the eaves within reach. Each one is sized for what it will hold. They’re ideal for clothes and bedding.
How fitting works for loft storage
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
- A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
- We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
How to prepare
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Ask for a quote
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Could you do it yourself?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Your questions about loft storage in Picketts Lock
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Picketts Lock?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
How long is the fitting for eaves storage?
How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Does eaves storage affect the insulation?
Not when it is planned well. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. Insulation and ventilation work itself isn’t ours.
Why people ask for loft storage in Picketts Lock
Some people want to make more of a dormer. Shelves, a desk or a seat in the dormer make it useful. It adds storage without crowding the room.
Requests we hear often include:
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
- Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs
- No wardrobe that fits under the slope
If you live in a flat close to Ponders End station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
Storage in Picketts Lock homes: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 27% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Picketts Lock, with about 20% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Picketts Lock is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Enfield is no exception. If your street in Picketts Lock is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints' Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. Bruce Castle, about 2.6 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.
