South Chingford Under-Stairs Storage

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on under-stairs storage in South Chingford starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Cleaning things with no proper home
  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes

Under-stairs storage in South Chingford

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Under-stairs storage in South Chingford: what you get

In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. Here the doors, drawer fronts and finish matter as much as the storage behind them. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. If you’re living with a sloping corner nobody can reach and a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out, under-stairs cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Walls in houses from between the wars are usually straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Much of the housing around South Chingford is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us a little about the space under your stairs, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and discuss the design.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to read through.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use. Any meters stay easy to reach.

Practical tips

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
  • Let us know if the hall is being decorated
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board

Decorating around the storage is for your decorator, and it’s best to protect the new paintwork while they work. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. If anything is not right, tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll talk it through.

Keep the way to the meter or fuse board clear. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in South Chingford

Is South Chingford in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes. South Chingford is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Waltham Forest and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Meridian Water station?

Yes, homes across Waltham Forest and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted to match.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors and drawer fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Their edges are cut to follow the angle of the stairs, keeping the lines neat.

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.

Fitted storage in South Chingford

The biggest shares of homes in the area around South Chingford were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 61%) and since 2000 (about 12%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of South Chingford, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Edmund (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in South Chingford joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For a family home near Chingford Hall Primary Academy, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Close to Lloyd Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a flat close to Meridian Water station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
