Fitted wardrobes in Picketts Lock: what you get

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. People usually come to us about condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and storage boxes stacked under the bed; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Wherever your home in Picketts Lock sits in London’s mix of housing, fitted wardrobes are designed for the room as it is. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. The inside layout is planned around what you actually store.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Advice

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Empty the area where we’ll be working
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls

Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight.

Is bespoke worth it?

Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, rather than where you need them. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Picketts Lock homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Picketts Lock were built before 1919 (about 27%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Picketts Lock is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Enfield has its own. If your road in Picketts Lock falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Close to Pymmes Park? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints' Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a family home near Delta Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Picketts Lock?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London, and Picketts Lock is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near Ponders End station?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It’s planned so there’s room around the bed and the room does not feel enclosed.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth and the doors line up.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
