Under-stairs storage in Rise Park, Havering

In Rise Park, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • A fuse board that’s hard to get to
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work

Under-stairs storage in Rise Park

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

How we make under-stairs storage for Rise Park

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. People normally come to us about a dark, wasted space under the stairs and a fuse board that’s hard to get to, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around Rise Park, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Rise Park

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 50% of the housing in the area around Rise Park, with about 44% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Havering has its own. Depending on your street in Rise Park, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Tell us what the parking is like at the design visit. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 84% of households in the neighbourhood around Rise Park, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

If your home is one of the older houses near St James, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. For a family home near Rise Park Infant School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Close to Raphael Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Tips worth knowing

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Make room so the whole space can be measured
  • Note the size of anything tall you want to store

We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. You’ll know everything works as planned.

Keep the way to the meter or fuse board clear. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Rise Park

Do you cover homes near Gidea Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Rise Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

The answer depends on your stairs and what you’ll keep there. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The width and height of the space

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a written quote.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.
