Fitted wardrobes in RM1: how it works

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are an awkward slope in a loft bedroom and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall.

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

How our quotes work

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Starting with a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Landmarks near Romford

Our area takes in the homes around Parish Church of St Edward the Confessor, Concordia Academy and Lodge Farm Park and the streets around them. Other local landmarks include The Moon & Stars pub (within half a mile east), Frances Bardsley Academy for Girls (0.8 miles east) and St. Edward's Church of England School (1.2 miles west). Romford has its own railway station: Romford station. A little further out are The Brewery (less than half a mile south-west) and Oldchurch Hospital (under half a mile south). Not far away are The Chase Nature Reserve.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across RM1

From Romford, Hornchurch and Heath Park to the quieter streets, bedrooms across RM1 range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.

About 45% of the homes in the RM1 postcode district went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 18% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. More than a third of the homes in RM1 (about 45%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. About 47% of households in the RM1 postcode district live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so we plan access to your home in RM1 ahead of fitting day.

Romford: If you live in a flat close to Romford station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For a family home near Concordia Academy, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes

Caring for painted furniture

People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.

Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. Opening a window now and then helps.

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly. The colour is agreed at the design stage.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth raises the wardrobe off the floor and takes up any slope. Its height can be set to match the skirting.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Questions from RM1

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking the lease first.

How do I get started?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

The space in front of the wardrobe typically decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We look at it with you when we measure.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
