Fitted wardrobes across RM5: what to expect
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you at the measuring visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and mismatched bedroom furniture, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room.
- We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
- We send a written quote.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
What affects the price in RM5
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Getting a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across RM5
In RM5, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them.
The biggest shares of homes in the RM5 postcode district were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 37%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. More than half of the homes in RM5 (about 55%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Around a third of the homes in RM5 (about 37%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war bedrooms are usually simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.
Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Collier Row: The wider area includes historic houses like Hare Hall, about 1.7 miles east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a family home near Rise Park Infant School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
What it is made from
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished. Give the paint time to cure fully.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawer fronts can sit behind the doors or on the outside as you prefer. Inside drawers keep the front simple.
What it costs
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The internal fittings
- The width and height of the space
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking during the design visit.
Getting in touch
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it helps to send:
- How you want to use the space
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Do you need fitted wardrobes?
Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes spill onto chairs, into spare rooms and under the bed. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling.
We’re often asked to help with:
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Not enough hanging space
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
Tips worth knowing
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that is barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, as they can dull the paint.
Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. Opening a window now and then helps.
When you need someone else
Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- Decorating or plastering the room
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
How do I get started?
It’s easiest to message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
What are your fitted wardrobes made from?
We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls, so the doors line up properly.
