Fitted wardrobes across RM2: what to expect
The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so coats and dresses have room and shirts do not waste height. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about not enough hanging space and empty alcoves in the bedroom.
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.
- You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
- A written quote follows.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

Bedroom storage across RM2
If your bedroom in RM2 has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. Where there is not one, fitted wardrobes can run along a full wall instead. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 38% of the housing in RM2, with about 21% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. More than a third of the homes in the RM2 postcode district (about 38%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 45% of households in RM2 live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Ardleigh Green: If you live in a flat close to Gidea Park station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For an older house near All Saints, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
What it costs
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- The number of doors and drawers
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How square the room is
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.
Helping us understand the room
A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in RM2
Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.
We’re often asked to help with:
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
What it’s made from
Doors and drawer fronts
Where there is room to open them, hinged doors give full access. Sliding doors suit narrow rooms.
Plinths and scribe strips
Most fitted wardrobes in older homes need scribing at the sides and top. It’s what makes the wardrobe look built in.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard wardrobes cannot follow a slope. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line.
What to check before you book
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
FAQs: fitted wardrobes in RM2
Will you travel outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
Everything is made in our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth.
