Under-stairs storage in South Harrow

Under-stairs storage for homes in South Harrow

Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. These must stay easy to reach for meter readers and engineers. We plan the storage around them, usually with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so you gain storage without losing access. If you’re not sure what’s under your stairs in South Harrow, we will look when we visit. If your home has a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter and space under the stairs that’s hard to use, under-stairs cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. Around South Harrow, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Storage in South Harrow homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around South Harrow were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and since 2000 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of South Harrow. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 45% of homes in the neighbourhood around South Harrow date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Interwar houses usually have a straight flight of stairs with a cupboard below, often holding the meters or the fuse board, so the design keeps them reachable.

Where other trades come in

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry
  • Structural changes to the staircase itself

FAQs: under-stairs storage in South Harrow

Do you cover homes near Northolt Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Is South Harrow in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London, and South Harrow is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

It depends on the shape of the space and what you want to store. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store, like coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you. The way to any meters is left clear.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner
  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
  • Plan decorating around the fitting

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a little of the paint, or a note of the colour, for later. Spray-painted fronts have a smooth, even finish that wipes clean.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

The problems under-stairs storage solve

The low end of the space is typically the problem. It is too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Drawers that slide out on runners turn that tricky corner into useful storage.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • A fuse board that is hard to get to
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Parish Church of St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
