Under-Stairs Storage in Stanmore
In Stanmore, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
- An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
- A fuse board that is hard to get to

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Helping us understand the room
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Your postcode and the borough
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
About our under-stairs storage in Stanmore
Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. We can build a desk with shelves above and a drawer or two below. If you’d like a socket or a light, your electrician fits it and we plan the furniture around it. It is worth talking through at the design visit in Stanmore. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Stanmore, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Could you do it yourself?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
FAQs: under-stairs storage in Stanmore
I live near Harrow & Wealdstone station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?
It depends on the height and how open the space is. We look at it at the design visit and tell you honestly whether it will work. If it does, a compact desk with shelving can suit paperwork and a laptop.
What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. It varies with the size of the space, how many drawers and doors you want, and the finish. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Stanmore?
Sometimes the reason is a meter reading or an engineer’s visit, and the struggle to reach the meter. Planned storage can leave a clear path to the meter or fuse board, while the rest of the space is put to proper use.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
- Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
- An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
- Cleaning things with no proper home
If your children go to Whitchurch Primary School & Nursery or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Real projects you can actually look at
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
What happens on fitting day
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and tell us a little about the space under your stairs.
- We visit to measure the space and discuss the design with you.
- We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls. Any meters stay easy to reach.
Before we arrive
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
