Under-Stairs Storage in Wealdstone

Pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs, for homes in Wealdstone. We measure, design and quote first, then make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs

How we price under-stairs storage

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The width and height of the space
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Getting in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • How you want to use the space

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Under-stairs storage in Wealdstone

No two staircases are quite the same. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. It’s the part of the job a boxed unit simply cannot manage. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a sloping corner nobody can reach and a dark, wasted space under the stairs.

Around Wealdstone, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting day works

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Wealdstone?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Wealdstone affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

It is built in our workshop. After that, we fit it in your home.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

Why bespoke in Wealdstone?

A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Fitted in front of one, it can make access awkward for readings and safety checks. A design made for the space keeps them in clear reach from the start. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route during the design visit.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Fitted storage in Wealdstone

In the area around Wealdstone, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 37%) and before 1919 (about 29%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Wealdstone include Magistrates Court (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Church of St Joseph (catholic) (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Harrow are set locally. If your road in Wealdstone falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

Headstone Manor, about 0.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. For a flat near Harrow & Wealdstone station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
