Under-stairs storage in South Norwood, Croydon
In South Norwood, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.
- An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall
- Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
- Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
Under-stairs storage designed for your room
Under-stairs storage in South Norwood: what you get
Where a staircase is open to a living space, the storage under it becomes part of the room. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. In South Norwood or anywhere else, the aim is storage that looks considered, not added on. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are stairs open to a room, with clutter on show and a sloping corner nobody can reach.
Not every home has a loft conversion, a bay or a cupboard under the stairs, but almost every home has somewhere storage could go. For a home in South Norwood, the design visit is where the options are worked out. Under-stairs cupboards are then made at our workshop and fitted on site.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Parking and unloading on your street
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
Before the design visit
A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Common questions about under-stairs storage
Does a conservation area in or near South Norwood affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Norwood Junction station?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?
Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. We do not move meters, so the storage works around their current position.
Can you match the storage to my hallway?
Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it looks like part of the house.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what’s near you at the measuring visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.
- First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need.
- We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
- We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
- Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you. The way to any meters is left clear.
Before fitting day
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Before and after fitting day
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Clear the space before the design visit if you can
- Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. That way, nothing is left for you to sort out later.
Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. Overfilled drawers put strain on the runners, so it pays to sort them now and then. Deal with any wet shoes or umbrellas before they mark the base.

Under-stairs storage in South Norwood: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 41% of the housing in the area around South Norwood, with about 17% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of South Norwood, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Croydon has its own. If your street in South Norwood is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
If you live near South Norwood Recreation Ground, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Stanley Technical High School and Stanley Halls, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Kingswood House, about 2.2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
