Croydon Under-Stairs Storage
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on under-stairs storage in Croydon starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
- Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter

Questions from Croydon
How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Croydon?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Croydon?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
How long will you be in my home?
It depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk about it during the design visit.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Under-stairs storage in Croydon: what you get
The space under a staircase is often the hardest-working spot in a house, and the least organised. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, with pull-out drawers, cupboards or a combination of the two. For a home in Croydon, it starts with a design visit to measure the space and talk it through. Most enquiries start with a low corner too deep to reach into and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Many homes around Croydon date from 2000 onwards, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitted storage in Croydon
Homes built since 2000 make up about 36% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Croydon, with about 28% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Croydon include Old Palace Croydon: Great Hall (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north-west, and Old Palace Croydon: Chapel (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Purpose-built flats are more common around Croydon than across the rest of London: about 52% of households, against about 29%, based on Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.
If you live near Park Hill Recreation Ground, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For an older house near St Andrew's, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
- Moving gas pipes under the stairs
- New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
Boards, parts and finishes
- Spray-painted finish
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Pull-out drawers
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
What it costs
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Parking and unloading on your street
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Spray painting or hand painting
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Before the design visit
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it’s useful to send:
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.
Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Croydon
In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It often eases the load on every other cupboard too.
Requests we hear often include:
- Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
- The low end of the space going to waste
- A fuse board that is hard to get to
- A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
For a family home near Heathfield Academy, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Where they’ll park and unload
- How doors and drawers are fitted

Fitting day, step by step
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.
- You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
- At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
- We send a written quote for the storage.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.
Before fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
How to get a quote
To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Advice
What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
With wet shoes and coats coming in, a moisture-resistant grade of MDF is a sensible choice. It gives the painted fronts a smooth base, and it holds its shape in the space under the stairs.
Pull-out drawers
Pull-out drawers bring the deep, low end of the space within reach. We size each drawer for what you plan to keep in it. A set of drawers can step down to follow the line of the stairs.
