Under-stairs storage in Purley, Croydon

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on under-stairs storage in Purley starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter

Under-stairs storage in Purley

Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. We can build a desk with shelves above and a drawer or two below. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. We’ll look at whether it suits your stairs when we visit in Purley. People typically come to us about a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and a fuse board that’s hard to get to, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Purley, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What it is made from

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Their edges are cut to follow the angle of the stairs, so the gaps stay even all the way along.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted to match.

When you need someone else

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry
  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage
  • Gas pipework, which needs an engineer on the Gas Safe Register

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Purley

Is Purley in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes, Purley is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Purley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?

That depends on the shape of your stairs and the room beside them. We look at it at the measuring visit and tell you honestly whether it will work. If it does, a compact desk with shelving can suit paperwork and a laptop.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, often with a door of its own. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Purley

When a home is short on storage, the space under the stairs is too useful to waste. A well-designed under-stairs cupboard can take the coats, shoes, cleaning things and bags that would otherwise crowd the hall. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • Storage that does not match the hallway
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach

Close to Dollypers Hill? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Making use of tricky spaces in Purley

Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 62% of households in the neighbourhood around Purley, according to Census 2021. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier. All of London, Croydon included, is inside the ULEZ.
