  • A larder for food and small appliances
  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • Room for everything in the kitchen

For a flat near Norwood Junction station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What to check before you book

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

About our bespoke kitchens in South Norwood

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. We check there’s comfortable space on every side, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. If the room is narrow, we’ll suggest other layouts. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a painted dresser for the kitchen and cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so kitchens range from narrow back additions to open-plan rooms. The kitchen is designed for your room as it is. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so fixings are chosen for each one.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the kitchen we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so tell us what applies at the measuring visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You tell us about the room and how you use it. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
  3. A quote follows, covering the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer handle the services. We do not arrange these trades ourselves.

Preparing the room

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Kitchens in South Norwood: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 41% of the housing in the area around South Norwood, with about 17% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of South Norwood, Historic England’s list includes Stanley Technical High School and Stanley Halls (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Clock Tower (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in South Norwood joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mark, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. For a family home near St Mark's Church of England Primary Academy, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.

Where other trades come in

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Connecting a gas hob or cooker
  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Moving water or waste pipes

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Larders and dressers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Islands where space allows
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • How square the room is
  • How big the furniture is
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

Questions we are often asked

How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in South Norwood?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Kitchens are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Is South Norwood in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes, South Norwood is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How long will the kitchen take to fit?

The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so every cabinet is scribed and levelled.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
