For homes in Addiscombe, we make under-stairs storage from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you.

  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • A low corner too deep to reach into

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Under-stairs storage in Addiscombe

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Addiscombe combine the two. If your home has the low end of the space going to waste and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall, under-stairs cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and so do the awkward corners, from bays and stairs to halls and eaves. Under-stairs cupboards are designed for the space you have. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to get a quote

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Why bespoke in Addiscombe?

Standard storage is built for a level floor and a square space, and the space under a staircase is neither. Boxed units normally leave awkward gaps under the slope and dead space behind. Storage made for the space follows the angle of the stairs and uses its full depth. It costs more than something off the shelf, and what you gain is the space a standard unit can’t reach. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, which may not suit what you need to store. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Why work with us in Addiscombe

  • Saturday work by prior arrangement
  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Note the size of anything tall you want to store
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Let us know about parking during the design visit
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape, sharp knocks and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose handle is easy to tighten before it works its way out. If a door drops or a drawer starts to catch, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us what’s happening.

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:

  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Changing where a meter sits, which isn’t carpentry
  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it is made from

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Addiscombe

Do you cover homes near Norwood Junction station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Addiscombe?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Addiscombe is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. The storage is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Storage in Addiscombe homes: local notes

About 44% of the homes in the streets around Addiscombe went up before 1919, and about 27% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Addiscombe include Church of St Mildred (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west, and Addiscombe Farm Cottage (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Addiscombe (about 27%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Interwar houses normally have a straight flight of stairs with a cupboard below, often holding the meters or the fuse board, which must stay accessible.

For an older house near St Mildred's Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. For a family home near Oasis Academy Shirley Park, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Addington Palace, about 2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.
