Under-Stairs Storage in Elmers End

Planning under-stairs storage for a home in Elmers End? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter

Under-stairs storage for your home in Elmers End

About our under-stairs storage in Elmers End

In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. Here the doors, drawer fronts and finish matter as much as the storage behind them. We can make plain or panelled fronts, painted to sit with the walls or to stand out. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter and a low corner too deep to reach into.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Elmers End, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be applied once the storage is in place. It is easy to touch up later. Paint needs time to cure fully, so it is best treated gently at first.

Pull-out drawers

Some pull-outs are tall, with a rail for coats or room for a vacuum. Lower drawers suit shoes, bags and boxes. We plan the mix at the measuring visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Making use of awkward spaces in Elmers End

Homes built before 1919 make up about 39% of the housing in the area around Elmers End, with about 34% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Croydon included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Elmers End, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit. About 44% of households around Elmers End live in terraced houses, well above the figure for Croydon as a whole, about 23%, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraces bring narrow halls and tight stairs, so under-stairs cupboards are made in sections that fit.

Kingswood House, about 2.6 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. If you live in a flat close to Elmers End station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Questions from Elmers End

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Elmers End?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you cover homes near Elmers End station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

It depends on the height and how open the space is. At the design visit we will say whether a desk makes sense there. Where it works, it makes a neat spot for a laptop and paperwork.

How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Elmers End

Some people simply want somewhere for coats and shoes. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and the family has an obvious place to put things.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs

For a family home near Marian Vian Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
