About our under-stairs storage in Staples Corner

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. If your home has a low corner too deep to reach into and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Around Staples Corner, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and under-stairs cupboards are made to suit it.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. You choose the colour.

Plinths and scribe strips

Floors under the stairs are often out of level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so the doors and drawers run true.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Staples Corner

About 38% of the homes in the streets around Staples Corner went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There is a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Staples Corner, going by Historic England’s data. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. All of London, Barnet included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Staples Corner fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.

For families living near Parkfield Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Close to Clarefield Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a period home close to Church of St John, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish

What affects the price in Staples Corner

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The internal fittings
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The overall size of the piece

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Your postcode and the borough

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Staples Corner?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Staples Corner?

Yes. Staples Corner is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What is under-stairs storage made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Drawer boxes are birch plywood, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

How to prepare
