Walk-in wardrobes in Staples Corner

About our walk-in wardrobes in Staples Corner

Most designs start with the hanging. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. Most enquiries start with a bedroom without crowded wardrobes and proper shoe storage, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Staples Corner, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look in an older home.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers keep smaller clothes and accessories tidy, and they can sit below the hanging or within a run of shelves.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and what you want to store.
  2. We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and usually cost less, and in a square room they can work. In an older room with uneven walls and a sloping floor, they leave gaps. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall usually ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Walk-in wardrobes in Staples Corner: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 38% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Staples Corner, with about 19% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Staples Corner, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 38% of homes in the streets around Staples Corner date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

Heath House, about 2.2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If you live in a flat close to Brent Cross West station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For a family home near Parkfield Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Staples Corner is about 3 miles north-east of Finchley, in the London Borough of Barnet. From period terraces to newer flats in Staples Corner, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Across Barnet, we cover Staples Corner, along with the rest of the borough.

Across the rest of Barnet, our area takes in Finchley (3 miles north-east), Barnet (5 miles north), Burnt Oak (3 miles north-west), East Finchley (3 miles north-east), Whetstone (4 miles north-east) and Edgware (4 miles north-west).

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Count your coats and long garments
  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure

Adjustable shelves can be moved as your clothes change to suit what you store. It’s worth a rethink each season.

Plan any lighting with your electrician in good time. Wiring is their work, not ours, and it is easier to plan the units around it from the start.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

I live near Brent Cross West station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Staples Corner?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

How long does fitting take?

Every room is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know before we start.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

Either works. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, and open storage makes things quick to find. A mix of the two is common.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It’s made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Honest limits

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Damp treatment or repairs
  • Painting the walls of the room
  • New lights or sockets

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
