Under-Stairs Storage in Thamesmead

Thinking about under-stairs storage in Thamesmead? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work

Under-stairs storage in Thamesmead

Under-stairs storage in Thamesmead: what you get

In a narrow hallway, the stairs may offer the only spare room for coats and shoes. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. For a home in Thamesmead, it can make the front door feel far calmer. Typical reasons to get in touch are a staircase with untidy space beneath it and struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, no two homes have quite the same walls and floors. Each piece is scribed to the wall and set level, whatever the room is like. The finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Drawers under the stairs often carry heavy things, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. That’s why we make drawer boxes from birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws firmly. Long shelves benefit from it too.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it stays stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels of an under-stairs cupboard, where a smooth, even finish matters most.

Making use of tricky spaces in Thamesmead

In the neighbourhood around Thamesmead, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 71%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. About 36% of households in the streets around Thamesmead live in terraced houses, based on Census 2021. In a terraced house, the space under the stairs often holds the meters or the fuse board, so storage is designed to keep them reachable. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Thamesmead fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

For an older house near St Paul, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. For a family home near Jubilee Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live in a flat close to Abbey Wood station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Abbey Wood station?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Thamesmead?

Yes, Thamesmead is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bexley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there is enough height at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How long will the fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We know the hall is a busy route, so we keep it as clear as possible.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Think about what you’ll keep in each drawer
  • Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
  • Let us know about anything bulky that needs to fit
  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Avoid scourers and harsh chemicals, and dry the surface after wiping. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.

Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.

What it costs

There is no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • How square the room is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Helping us understand the room

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
