Under-stairs storage for your home in Thames View Estate

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Thames View Estate

Is parking a problem for fitting in Thames View Estate?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Thames View Estate?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London, and Thames View Estate is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

How we make under-stairs storage for Thames View Estate

We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in Thames View Estate. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are needing a compact spot for a laptop and nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board.

In a family house, the hall and stairs typically carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Thames View Estate, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

How we price under-stairs storage

The price for your room depends on:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What to send when you contact us

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Could you do it yourself?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

What we don’t do

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Structural changes to the staircase itself
  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Ask for a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It is done on site, in the colour you choose. Touch-ups are simple if the paint is ever knocked.

Thames View Estate homes and under-stairs storage

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 32% of the housing in the streets around Thames View Estate, with about 31% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Thames View Estate include Eastbury Manor House (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 28% of homes in the streets around Thames View Estate were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so under-stairs cupboards add storage that was never built in, with fixings chosen for the wall.
