We make under-stairs storage for homes in Erith, designed around the room you have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • A fuse board that is hard to get to
  • An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall

When you need someone else

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Pull-out drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Hand-painted finish

Under-stairs storage in Erith: what you get

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Erith combine the two. People typically come to us about an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. Whatever your home in Erith is like, the door style is part of the design conversation. You choose the colour, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Erith

Is parking a problem for fitting in Erith?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Erith affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

We make it in our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?

The answer depends on your stairs and what you will keep there. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Erith

About 26% of the homes in the streets around Erith went up before 1919, and about 22% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Erith. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 30% of households in the area around Erith live in terraced houses, based on Census 2021. Under-stairs cupboards in terraces often house the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board, so storage is designed to keep them reachable.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Christ Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Hall Place and Gardens, about 2.3 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. Living in a block of flats near Erith station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Drawer boxes and carcasses that take a load are often made from it. The layered edge can be left on show or painted.

Plinths and scribe strips

Floors under the stairs are often out of level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so everything opens and closes as it should.

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Before fitting day, we check the route in along with the room itself, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. You let us know about the space under the stairs.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design.
  3. We send a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Is bespoke worth it?

With ready-made units, the choice of colour is the maker’s. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can sit with the walls, the banisters or the skirting. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
