Under-stairs storage in Welling, Bexley
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on under-stairs storage in Welling starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
- Storage that does not match the hallway
- Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
Under-stairs storage in Welling
Under-stairs storage for homes in Welling
When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. It’s a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. Typical reasons to get in touch are a sloping corner nobody can reach and an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Welling, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically simple, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.
- You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
- We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it’s in.

Getting a quote
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Advice
What affects the cost of under-stairs storage
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The number of doors and drawers
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What to send when you get in touch
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.
How it is made
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall, closing the gap a standard unit would leave. They help the storage look as though it was always there. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels of an under-stairs cupboard, where a smooth, even finish matters most.
Looking after your furniture
Getting the most from under-stairs storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
- Think about what you’ll keep in each drawer
- Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
- Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. If there’s a meter or fuse board, we make sure its door opens fully and the meter is easy to see. You will know everything works as planned.
Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space isn’t in use. Overfilled drawers put strain on the runners, so it pays to sort them now and then. Deal with any wet shoes or umbrellas before they mark the base.

Could you do it yourself?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Making use of tricky spaces in Welling
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 75% of the housing in the area around Welling, with about 9% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Welling include Danson Park Mansion (Grade I), under half a mile south-east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Welling joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
For a flat near Welling station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to Danson Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Danson House, about 0.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Welling
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Welling station?
Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Welling?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?
Many designs use both. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, and a cupboard at the tall end handles taller things. We will suggest a layout when we visit.
How long will the fitting take?
How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We know the hall is a busy route, so we keep it as clear as possible.
