Under-stairs storage for your home in Upper Walthamstow
About our under-stairs storage in Upper Walthamstow
The space under a staircase is often the hardest-working spot in a house, and the least organised. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, with pull-out drawers, cupboards or a combination of the two. For a home in Upper Walthamstow, it starts with a design visit to measure the space and talk it through. Typical reasons to get in touch are a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and no room for a small desk or a place to work, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Some homes have eaves, some have bays and some have neither, but most have a recess, a landing or a corner that could take storage. For a home in Upper Walthamstow, the design visit is where the options are worked out. The storage is made in our workshop and fitted in your home.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Honest limits
Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
- Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician

Common questions about under-stairs storage
I live in a flat in Upper Walthamstow. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Upper Walthamstow?
Yes, we work across Waltham Forest, Upper Walthamstow included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Under-stairs storage in Upper Walthamstow: local notes
About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Upper Walthamstow went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Upper Walthamstow. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Waltham Forest are set locally. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.
Valentines Mansion, about 2.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Peter in the Forest, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Walthamstow House (Corpus Christi School), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Upper Walthamstow is part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest, about 1 mile west of Walthamstow. We cover Upper Walthamstow as part of our work across Waltham Forest, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We list Upper Walthamstow among 19 places we cover in Waltham Forest.

If you’re just outside Upper Walthamstow, we also cover Snaresbrook (1 mile east), Walthamstow Village (1 mile west), Bakers Arms (1 mile south-west), South Woodford (1 mile north-east) and Walthamstow (1 mile west). Around Upper Walthamstow
We fit furniture in homes around Warwick School for Boys, Holy Family Catholic School and The Flower Pot pub. Upper Walthamstow has its own railway station: Wood Street station. Well-known places in the area include 17 & Central (1.1 miles west) and Walthamstow Pump House Museum (1.7 miles south-west). Not far away are Hollow Pond.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it during the design visit.
Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, almost like a factory finish. It’s done in our workshop, before the storage comes to your home. The colour is agreed with you.
From workshop to your room
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

How to get a quote
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
Why bespoke in Upper Walthamstow?
A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Put in the wrong place, it can block the access meter readers and engineers need. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. Recesses, sloping ceilings and awkward corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have one somewhere. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
