Under-stairs storage for your home in South Woodford

South Woodford homes and under-stairs storage

The biggest shares of homes in the area around South Woodford were built before 1919 (about 29%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 16 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of South Woodford. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Redbridge sets its own rules. Depending on your street in South Woodford, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know what the parking is like during the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The George Inn, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 2.3 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. For a flat near Wood Street station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

South Woodford is part of the London Borough of Redbridge, about 1 mile north of Woodford. South Woodford is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. South Woodford is one of 18 places on our list for Redbridge.

Under-stairs storage for homes in South Woodford

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in South Woodford combine the two. People typically come to us about storage that doesn’t match the hallway and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A deep space is only useful if you can reach the back of it, so the design uses drawers, lids or shelves to bring things within reach. Whatever kind of home you have in South Woodford, the right answer depends on the depth and the height. Services like meters and boilers stay reachable.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

Not everything around under-stairs storage is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Changing where a meter sits, which isn’t carpentry

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Woodford?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in South Woodford?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?

Often a mix works best. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We talk it through at the measuring visit.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you. The way to any meters is left clear.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Advice

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

The floor under a staircase is rarely perfectly level. We set the storage level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors and drawers run true.

Doors and drawer fronts

Any access door for a meter can be made to look like the other fronts. It opens fully so the meter stays easy to read. The rest of the fronts can be doors, drawers or both.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs
  • Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. It is best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

For a few hooks and a shelf for the vacuum, a ready-made solution can do the job. Bespoke storage makes sense when you want every part of the space working, not just the easy part. At the design visit, we can talk honestly about which approach suits your stairs. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
