TV and media units in Upper Walthamstow
A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, like behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. It’s best done before we fit, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. Typical reasons to get in touch are a tangle of wires behind the TV and equipment with nowhere proper to go; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Homes in an area like Upper Walthamstow can come from many different periods, so the walls behind TV and media units could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. That is why every wall is checked at the design visit before the fixings are chosen. With a chimney breast, TV and media units normally fill the alcoves; without one, they can run along a whole wall.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned at the measuring visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
- We visit to plan the unit and check the way in. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
- We send a written quote.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Advice
Before and after fitting day
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
- Find out how much space each box needs around it
- Let us know about access early
- Talk to your electrician early about sockets
Vents and equipment shelves gather dust, so a quick clean now and then helps. It keeps air moving.
Label cables when you set things up to make future changes easier.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

FAQs: TV and media units in Upper Walthamstow
Is parking a problem for fitting in Upper Walthamstow?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Do you cover homes near Wood Street station?
Yes, homes across Waltham Forest and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Does my lease affect fitted furniture?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?
Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, with open backs, gaps or openings. Each box should have its own space.
Do you move sockets for a TV unit?
Your electrician does that. Ideally it’s done before fitting and we design the cable routes around the sockets.
What it’s made from
Shelves
Long shelves need the right thickness or a support so they stay straight.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, so it’s good for shelves that carry equipment and speakers.
Why people ask for TV and media units in Upper Walthamstow
In older living rooms, a TV can look out of place. Building it into the alcoves or around the chimney breast makes it part of the room, rather than the focus of it.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Bought furniture that does not suit the room
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- Nowhere good for speakers
- Boxes and consoles on the floor
Near listed buildings like Walthamstow House (Corpus Christi School), about 0.5 miles west of the centre of Upper Walthamstow, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Choosing a carpenter
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
