Alcove units for your home in Walthamstow Village

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Shop-bought shelving and cabinets can go in an alcove, and they’re usually cheaper. The trouble is usually the gaps: standard sizes seldom match the alcove, and walls that aren’t straight show up every gap. A bespoke alcove unit is made to your measurements and scribed to the plaster. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Alcove units in Walthamstow Village: what you get

In a tall room, a full-height alcove cupboard holds a great deal. In bedrooms, this often becomes a compact wardrobe or a place for bedding. We ask what you want to store before we plan the inside, and set out the shelves and rails around it. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are somewhere to keep books and records and tired cupboards in the alcoves.

Around Walthamstow Village, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Houses of that age normally have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, which gives alcove units an obvious place to go. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

How fitting works for alcove units

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch about alcove units and the room they’re for.
  2. At the design visit we measure up, agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in alongside the design and materials.
  4. We make the units in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted and scribed to the alcoves; a hand-painted finish is done on site after fitting and is easy to touch up later.
  6. New paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat the surfaces gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Questions from Walthamstow Village

My house in Walthamstow Village is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do you cover homes near Walthamstow Central station?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do both alcove units have to match?

That is your choice. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but many people put a desk or a TV in one alcove and cupboards in the other. We can keep the details the same so they still look like a pair.

How do I get started?

It’s easiest to message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

How long are you in the house for the fitting?

How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The units are made in our workshop first.

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
  • Make the alcoves easy to reach for measuring
  • Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold
  • Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice

Load the shelves evenly rather than piling weight in the middle. Books weigh more than most people expect, so spreading them out helps the shelves stay level.

Now and then, check handles and hinges are still tight.

Is it time for alcove units?

Sometimes it’s the clutter of a busy living room. Toys, games, paperwork and gadgets need somewhere to go, and cupboards with doors keep them out of sight. Open shelves above are left for the things you like to see.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • A desk that tucks into an alcove
  • Space for a growing book collection
  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace

If your children go to Walthamstow School for Girls or a school nearby, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Living-room storage in Walthamstow Village

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Walthamstow Village were built before 1919 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 30 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Walthamstow Village. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. We will plan where the van can stop.

If you live in a period home close to St. Mary's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Lloyd Park, alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
