Living-room carpentry in West Hendon: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around West Hendon were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 38%) and since 2000 (about 35%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of West Hendon include Church of the Holy Innocents (Grade II), less than half a mile west, and Church of St John (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south-east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. More than a third of the homes in the streets around West Hendon (about 38%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and TV and media units are planned around both.
If you live near West Hendon Playing Fields, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If you live in a flat close to Hendon station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
West Hendon is part of the London Borough of Barnet, about 3 miles north-east of Finchley. Anywhere in West Hendon, the process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. West Hendon is one of 41 places on our list for Barnet.

TV and media units for homes in West Hendon
A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, such as behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. It is best done before we fit. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about standard units leaving gaps and a screen at the wrong height.
Many homes around West Hendon were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats in newer developments. Living rooms in newer homes can be compact, so shallower units and wall-hung cupboards keep the floor open. Boxed-in pipes and service risers are common, and they can be built around rather than hidden badly.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
How fitting day works
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so it helps to sort them out beforehand. TV and media units are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.
- You describe the TV wall and your equipment, from set-top boxes to speakers.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
- Once you are happy, the unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Caring for painted furniture
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
- Find out how much space each box needs around it
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
- Think about whether you will upgrade the screen
Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. For the first while, place equipment gently rather than sliding it, so the paint isn’t scuffed.
Do not stack boxes on top of each other in one space because heat builds up between them. Each one needs space around it.
Why people ask for TV and media units in West Hendon
A new, larger TV often prompts it. The old stand looks too small, or the screen dominates the wall. A unit around it puts it in proportion.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:
- Equipment with nowhere proper to go
- Standard units leaving gaps
- A tangle of wires behind the TV
- A cabinet that traps heat
For an older house near St Matthias the Apostle church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
Common questions about TV and media units
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in West Hendon?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in West Hendon?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it’s useful to be around at the end.
Is there room for a soundbar?
Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar with open bays for bigger speakers. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.
How much will my TV unit cost?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
