Under-stairs storage in Kenton, Brent

Under-stairs storage in Kenton: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, built in our workshop and fitted by us.

  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • A fuse board that is hard to get to
  • The low end of the space going to waste

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Under-stairs storage for homes in Kenton

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork.

An interwar house normally has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. Around Kenton, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it is worth looking up as well as down. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it is worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. It starts when you contact us with a few details about the space, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. We visit to measure the space and go through the design with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
  • Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use

Heavy items are best kept in the lower drawers. That keeps the drawers running smoothly and the load where the carcass is strongest. We size the shelves for what you said you’d store, so stick to that and they’ll stay straight.

Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box or bag, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

Under-stairs storage in Kenton: local notes

In the streets around Kenton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 84%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 7%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Kenton is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Kenton is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. For a family home near St Gregory's Catholic Science College, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If you live in a flat close to Kenton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What we don’t do

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Altering or cutting into the stairs
  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling

Questions from Kenton

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Kenton?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Kenton?

Yes, we work across Brent, Kenton included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

In many homes it’s possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. A spray-painted finish is done in our workshop, and a hand-painted one can be done on site. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.
