Under-Stairs Storage in Wembley

For homes in Wembley, we make under-stairs storage from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Each piece is finished by spray or by hand, in the colour you choose.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Think about how your household uses coats and shoes

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It is worth keeping a note of the colour so any touch-ups match. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often clean off with a damp cloth.

Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. Let them dry before they go away, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Wembley

In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. Our designs keep a clear way to them, often behind their own door, so you gain storage without losing access. If you are not sure what’s under your stairs in Wembley, we will look when we visit. Most enquiries start with a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and a dark, wasted space under the stairs; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Hallways in newer flats and houses are often short, with doors opening off every side, which leaves little wall for storage. Around Wembley, many homes were built since 2000, so that is worth planning for. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Fitted storage in Wembley

About 53% of the homes in the area around Wembley went up since 2000, and about 30% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Wembley is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 53% of homes in the area around Wembley were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are normally plasterboard on studs, so under-stairs cupboards are designed with fixings to suit.

Close to Preston Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. Near listed buildings like Wembley Hill Lodge, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Wembley, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so tell us what applies at the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted, because they must stay accessible.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route during the design visit.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

I live in a flat in Wembley. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Under-stairs cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Wembley?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How do I get started?

It’s easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

How many days does the fitting take?

That depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We plan it once we’ve measured the room.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Wembley?

Many people get in touch after digging through clutter to reach a meter or the fuse board. Planned storage can leave a clear path to the meter or fuse board, while the rest of the space is put to proper use.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • A fuse board that is hard to get to
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags

If you live in a period home close to St Augustine, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
