Under-stairs storage in North Wembley, Brent

In North Wembley, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • The low end of the space going to waste

How we make under-stairs storage for North Wembley

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. If your home has a fuse board that’s hard to get to and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around North Wembley, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Under-stairs cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Advice

How we price under-stairs storage

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, message us from the contact page.

What to send when you contact us

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

I live near Wembley Central station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Brent and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.

What is under-stairs storage made from?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. The design keeps a clear way to the meter or fuse board, typically behind its own door. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

Storage in North Wembley homes: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 39% of the housing in the streets around North Wembley, with about 22% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of North Wembley. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your street in North Wembley joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If you live near Preston Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. For a family home near Park Lane Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. The wider area includes historic houses like Northolt Manor, about 2.9 miles west. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done in your home, once the storage is fitted. Small marks are simple to touch in later, which suits a busy hallway.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.

Where other trades come in

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
