How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold, from long coats to shoes.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout, including any dressing table.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build everything in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Cowley

A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and separate space for two people’s clothes.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and the walls in a bedroom might be brick, blockwork, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Each wall is checked during the design visit before fixings are chosen. If the room has a chimney breast, the alcoves can take fitted storage; if not, a full wall often works best.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Bedrooms in Cowley: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Cowley were built since 2000 (about 29%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 26%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Cowley, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Cowley. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Ickenham Hall, about 2.9 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Laurence, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Questions we are often asked

My home in Cowley is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Cowley?

Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London, and Cowley is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Is ventilation important in a dressing room?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting
  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

Let air move through the walk-in wardrobe, particularly if it is on an external wall. Avoid packing clothes tight against the back of the units to help air move.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Cowley?

Couples sharing a wardrobe often want more space each. A walk-in wardrobe can be planned with a side for each, so neither of you is squeezed.

Walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • Room for a growing wardrobe
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom
  • A calmer, clearer bedroom

For a family home near Cowley St Laurence CofE Primary School, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
