About our walk-in wardrobes in Hayes

Many London homes have a small room that is tricky as a bedroom. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. If you are living with a side each for a couple and turning a box room into a dressing room, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Hayes, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A bespoke walk-in wardrobe takes more planning than buying a system, and it costs more. In return, the layout is built around your clothes and your room. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Why choose us

  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • Built around your room
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Let air move through the space
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

Let air move through the walk-in wardrobe, particularly on a cooler external wall. Leave a little space behind hanging clothes to help air move.

If the room is on an external wall, have any damp sorted first. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.

Questions from Hayes

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Hayes?

Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London, and Hayes is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

That depends on how you like to use the space. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we will talk it through at the design visit.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Hayes

In the area around Hayes, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and the years since 2000 (about 19%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Hayes, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and Whitehall (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 49% of households in the area around Hayes live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

For a flat near Hayes & Harlington station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. The wider area includes historic houses like Northolt Manor, about 3 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

Others want to clear the bedroom of wardrobes. With clothes in a dressing room, the bedroom can feel more restful.

Walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • A walk-in wardrobe in a box room
  • A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes

If you live near Barra Hall Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before we arrive
