Honest limits

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Painting the walls of the room

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Walk-in wardrobes in Hornchurch Marshes: what you get

Lighting makes a big difference in a dressing room. Wiring for new lights is a job for your electrician. We plan the units with your electrician’s work in mind and agree the details when we measure. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are separate space for two people’s clothes and room for a growing wardrobe.

Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so we check before fixing into them. Many homes around Hornchurch Marshes date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Hornchurch Marshes?

Sometimes a house changes and a room becomes spare. A walk-in wardrobe is a popular way to use it.

Walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • Room for a growing wardrobe
  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • A use for a small spare room

Close to Wildspace Conservation Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure

Questions from Hornchurch Marshes

I live near Dagenham Dock station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Is Hornchurch Marshes in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes, we work across Havering, Hornchurch Marshes included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

In many homes, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls and still leave room to move. We’ll measure and plan it during the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Arranging a design visit

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Leave room for air behind hanging clothes
  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, so hinges allow small adjustments later.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. External walls can be colder and damper, so we allow for ventilation.

Hornchurch Marshes homes and walk-in wardrobes

About 43% of the homes in the streets around Hornchurch Marshes went up since 2000, and about 34% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 43% of homes around Hornchurch Marshes were built since 2000, well above the figure for Havering as a whole, about 13%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Hornchurch Marshes (about 34%) were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.

For an older house near Church of St Helen and St Giles, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live in a flat close to Dagenham Dock station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.
