Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Hampton Wick

With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. We build them in spare rooms, box rooms and corners of bedrooms, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. Most enquiries start with storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe and separate space for two people’s clothes, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms can be anything from a box room to a big front room. Walk-in wardrobes can work in any of them, from a small spare room to a main bedroom. Nothing is assumed to be square, so the room is measured carefully.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking near your home

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

What we need to know

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Examples of the look you are after

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Before and after fitting day

People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Plan shoe storage around what you own
  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Know what you will keep before planning
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth surface that wipes clean.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and what you want to store.
  2. We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the design we’ve agreed, for you to read through.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop.
  5. The units are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Bedrooms in Hampton Wick: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Hampton Wick were built before 1919 (about 37%) and since 2000 (about 26%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of Hampton Wick is within about a quarter of a mile of the Hampton Wick Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 26% of homes in the neighbourhood around Hampton Wick were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.

For families living near St John the Baptist Church of England Junior School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live near Canbury Gardens, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of All Saints, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Hampton Wick

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Hampton Wick?

Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London, and Hampton Wick is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

It’s your choice. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, and open storage makes things quick to find. Many people choose a mix.

Is ventilation important in a dressing room?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, especially on an external wall, which can be colder and damper. We allow for ventilation in the design.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes, where the room is large enough. A section of the room can become a dressing area, with doors or left open. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.
