Need walk-in wardrobes in Surbiton?
What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Surbiton
The most common reason is simply running out of wardrobe space. Rails are crammed, shelves overflow and shoes end up under the bed. A walk-in wardrobe gives everything room.
Walk-in wardrobes can help with:
- A dressing area in part of a bedroom
- Room for two wardrobes in one space
- Room for a growing wardrobe
- Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
For families living near Lime Tree Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

About our walk-in wardrobes in Surbiton
Most designs start with the hanging. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and a side each for a couple.
A bedroom used as a guest room, a study or a dressing room needs different storage. In Surbiton, as anywhere in London, we start by asking what the room is for. The layout, the doors and the inside follow from that. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted, in a colour agreed with you.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes
To work out the quote, we look at:
- How big the furniture is
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
What to send when you get in touch
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Examples of the look you’re after
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Surbiton homes and walk-in wardrobes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 31% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Surbiton, with about 19% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Surbiton. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Kingston upon Thames are set locally. Depending on your street in Surbiton, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Horner Cottage, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Hampton Court Palace, about 1.8 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.
Surbiton is in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, about 2 miles north of Kingston upon Thames. From period terraces to newer flats in Surbiton, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our work takes in places right across Kingston upon Thames.
Postcode districts we cover here for walk-in wardrobes: KT6, KT5 and KT1. If your home is on a street such as St Andrew's Square, South Bank and Hazelwood Court, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for walk-in wardrobes. Surbiton is near the A240 and A3210; on busy main roads, unloading walk-in wardrobes takes a little planning. Nearby, we also make walk-in wardrobes in Berrylands (1 mile east), Tolworth (1 mile south-east) and Chessington (2 miles south). Other parts of Kingston upon Thames we cover include Kingston upon Thames (2 miles north), New Malden (2 miles north-east), Norbiton (2 miles north-east), Hook (2 miles south), Motspur Park (2 miles north-east) and Coombe (2 miles north-east). Being one of the larger places in Kingston upon Thames, Surbiton is covered for walk-in wardrobes and everything else we make.

Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near Surbiton affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you cover homes near Surbiton station?
Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.
Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?
In many cases, yes. It depends on the room’s shape and where the door and window sit, so we work it out when we measure.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Honest limits
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Painting the walls of the room
- Curing damp in the walls
- Building a new partition wall

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

Advice
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
