Fitted home offices for homes in Malden Rushett
Not every home has a spare room, but a wide landing or a loft room can work. A desk under a sloping ceiling needs careful planning so you can sit and stand comfortably. On a landing, it has to leave room to walk by. At the design visit in Malden Rushett, we’ll see what fits. We make home offices from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about files and folders piling up and wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day.
The bay window in a 1930s front room or bedroom gives good daylight for a desk, and storage can run along the walls either side. Around Malden Rushett, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. The desk can be shaped to the bay or set across it, with a grille if there is a radiator below.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the home office we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

What prompts fitted home offices in Malden Rushett
Trailing cables are one of the things people most want to sort. A desk designed with cable routes keeps them tidy. Any new sockets are for your electrician, and we design around them.
Here’s what fitted home offices can help with:
- A tangle of chargers and leads
- Glare from a window on the screen
- A desk buried under papers
- Working at the kitchen table
Living in a block of flats near Chessington South station? Then home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Real projects you can actually look at
What it’s made from
Doors and drawer fronts
A desk can sit behind doors, out of sight when you are done. It’s useful where the room has other jobs too. We’ll go through the options during the design visit.
Pull-out drawers
Desk drawers keep the things you use every day close by. Deeper drawers can take files. We size each drawer to suit.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Built-in desks and shelving in Malden Rushett
About 45% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Malden Rushett went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 23% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Malden Rushett include Rushett Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Malden Rushett (about 45%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Post-war rooms are typically regular in shape, so a desk and shelving can run wall to wall.
Close to Claygate Common? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. For a family home near Chessington Community College, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.

Common questions about fitted home offices
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Malden Rushett?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Do you cover homes near Chessington South station?
Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
How is a home office priced?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A simple desk with shelves involves less work than a full wall of cupboards and drawers. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Fitting day, step by step
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

- We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
- The office is made in our workshop and painted in your colour.
