Fitted wardrobes designed for your room
Before and after fitting day
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line the doors up again, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and have the cause looked at early.
Fitted wardrobes in Surbiton
We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a bedroom that never feels tidy and damp or musty clothes against an external wall.
In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms range from box rooms to large rooms with bays and sloping ceilings. Fitted wardrobes can work in any of them, from a small spare room to a main bedroom. Nothing is assumed to be square, so the room is measured carefully.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Surbiton homes and fitted wardrobes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Surbiton were built before 1919 (about 31%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 20 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Surbiton. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 48% of households in the streets around Surbiton, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live in a flat close to Surbiton station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Stokes Field, fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. Hampton Court Palace, about 1.8 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
Surbiton is about 2 miles north of Kingston upon Thames, part of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. We cover Surbiton as part of our work across Kingston upon Thames. Surbiton is one of 16 places on our list for Kingston upon Thames.

Questions we are often asked
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Surbiton?
Yes, we work across Kingston upon Thames, Surbiton included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Surbiton?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, in moisture-resistant MDF. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

What happens on fitting day
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned at the measuring visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, and we arrange a design visit.
- We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
How to prepare
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Starting with a design visit
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

How it’s made
Hanging rails
We keep the top rail at a height you can reach without a step. Higher space above can hold shelves for things you use less.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain, so painted doors look smooth and even. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice for fitted work.
What fitted wardrobes can’t fix
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
- Structural changes to the room
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
What it’s made from
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
- Hinged or sliding doors
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
Why bespoke in Surbiton?
Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own, and adjustable shelves keep some flexibility. Off-the-shelf furniture is designed for no room in particular, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. The finish is chosen to suit the space.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit.
