About our wall beds in Surbiton
Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, so the bed does not dominate the working day. We can allow for cables to the desk, while new sockets are for your electrician. Most enquiries start with room for a desk and a guest bed and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Homes in an area like Surbiton can come from many different periods, so a bedroom could have solid brick walls, lath and plaster, blockwork or plasterboard. Each wall is checked at the design visit before fixings are chosen. If the room has a chimney breast, the alcoves can take fitted storage; if not, a full wall often works best.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift along with the room itself, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You tell us about the room.
- We come to measure and discuss the bed, the storage and the finish.
- A quote in writing follows.
- We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
Arranging a design visit

FAQs: wall beds in Surbiton
Is parking a problem for fitting in Surbiton?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Does a conservation area in or near Surbiton affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How much does a wall bed cost?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
How it is made
Spray-painted finish
For a sleek front, spray painting works well and is finished before it reaches you.
Birch plywood
For a sturdy cabinet, birch plywood is a good choice around a moving bed.
When is bespoke worth it?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Why people ask for wall beds in Surbiton
In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- A living room with a bed that folds away
- Storage built around a fold-down bed
- A guest bed that disappears in the day
- A spare room that’s rarely slept in

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
