Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

How we make wall beds for Cannon Hill

Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that’s sound enough to hold it. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. If you are living with a guest room that sits empty most of the time and storage built around a fold-down bed, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Cannon Hill, the third bedroom is often small, sitting over the stairs. Small rooms like that suit wall beds, whether the room is a guest room, a dressing room or a study. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Think about how often the bed will be used

Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Do not try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

Check how the cabinet will get into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so it helps to know about tight turns.

Questions from Cannon Hill

Is parking a problem for fitting in Cannon Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Is Cannon Hill in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes. Cannon Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

How are wall beds priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall is useful. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Is bespoke worth it?

A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, and that has its appeal. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them every day. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What you get with us

What prompts wall beds in Cannon Hill

Sofa beds aren’t always comfortable for regular use. With a wall bed, guests sleep on a real mattress, on a proper frame.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time

Living in a block of flats near South Merton station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
