  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A real mattress for visitors

Ask about wall beds in Eastfields

Do you need wall beds in Eastfields?

Studio flats and small one-bedroom flats are another reason. A bed that folds up gives you a living room in the day and a bedroom at night.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A studio that works by day and night
  • A flexible room for a growing family

For a family home near St Mark's Church of England Academy, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Wall beds in Eastfields

A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and is lowered again at night. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We make the cabinet for your room and finish it to match. People normally come to us about a studio that works by day and night and a hobby room with a bed for guests; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A good part of the housing around Eastfields is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Fitted bedroom furniture in Eastfields

In the area around Eastfields, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and before 1919 (about 16%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Eastfields, Historic England’s list includes Eagle House (Grade I), under half a mile west, and Prospect House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Eastfields (about 43%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

For an older house near St. Mark's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Living in a block of flats near Mitcham Eastfields station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Questions from Eastfields

Is parking a problem for fitting in Eastfields?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Is Eastfields in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, we work across Merton, Eastfields included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How long does fitting take?

Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to use the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, while new sockets are for your electrician.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Supplying mattresses
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Getting consent under your lease

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
