Wall beds designed for your room

Wall beds in Crooked Billet

In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat, and at night it becomes a bedroom. We can build shelves, cupboards or a desk around the bed cabinet to make the most of the wall. If your home has a guest room that sits empty most of the time and more floor space in a studio flat, that’s what wall beds are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Whether your home in Crooked Billet is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, the furniture starts from your room, not a standard size. On an external wall, ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps keep condensation away. The inside layout is planned around what you actually store.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the wall bed we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. We can build to the full height and width, with storage or shelves filling the rest of the wall. Recesses, sloping ceilings and tricky corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have at least one. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Practical tips

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Consider how many people will sleep in it

If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. Don’t try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well for a clean, even look.

Birch plywood

For a sturdy cabinet, birch plywood is a good choice for a piece that moves every day.

Wall beds for homes in Crooked Billet

Homes built before 1919 make up about 34% of the housing in the area around Crooked Billet, with about 21% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Crooked Billet is in the Wimbledon West Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Merton are set locally. If your street in Crooked Billet is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

For a family home near Wimbledon College, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Southside House, about 0.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Living in a block of flats near Raynes Park station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

FAQs: wall beds in Crooked Billet

Is parking a problem for fitting in Crooked Billet?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is Crooked Billet in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes. Crooked Billet is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fitting day, we check the route in along with the room itself, so wall beds arrive in sections that fit through. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The cabinet is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.

Preparing the room

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
