Fitted bedroom furniture in South Wimbledon
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around South Wimbledon were built before 1919 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 15%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of South Wimbledon, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Winefride (Grade II), less than half a mile east, and Pelham High School (Grade II), under half a mile south. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 20% of households in the area around South Wimbledon live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
If you live near Wandle Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. For a family home near Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Wall beds in South Wimbledon: what you get
Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. By day, the room is a living space, and at night it becomes a bedroom. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above to make the most of the wall. People usually come to us about a playroom that can sleep visitors and a guest room that sits empty most of the time, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Floors in older houses often slope, and a large share of the homes around South Wimbledon are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

From workshop to your room
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
- You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
- The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made wall bed units are available and typically cost less, and they can work in a simple space. They’re made in standard sizes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. Ours is made to the room you have. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
Why choose us
- Finished by spray or by hand
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Saturdays by arrangement
- Made for your room, not a standard size

Flats, leases and landlords
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Materials and finishes
Bed mechanism housing
A wall bed housing needs to be rigid and true, so it is built from sturdy board. It’s fixed into a wall or floor that can take the load.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site after fitting. Marks are easy to touch in.
Questions from South Wimbledon
Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in South Wimbledon?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Wimbledon station?
Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?
That’s something we look at when we measure. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.
Is a mattress included with the wall bed?
The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We will explain its limits during the design visit, so you can choose with confidence.
How much space does a wall bed need?
You need clear floor in front of the cabinet for the bed to fold down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We check the space when we measure and plan the layout around it.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
