Questions from Wimbledon
Does a conservation area in or near Wimbledon affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Wimbledon station?
Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What space does a fold-down bed take up?
It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. At the design visit we measure the room and check there is enough space in front.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
It is made in sections. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
Wall beds in Wimbledon: what you get
A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, so we plan the layout with that in mind. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. We make wall beds from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a flexible room for a growing family and a guest room that sits empty most of the time.
Homes in an area like Wimbledon can come from many different periods, and the walls in a bedroom might be brick, blockwork, lath and plaster or plasterboard. We check at the design visit and choose fixings for each one. If the room has a chimney breast, the alcoves can take fitted storage; if not, a full wall often works best.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Wall beds for homes in Wimbledon
In the streets around Wimbledon, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Wimbledon include Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and The Old Rectory House (Grade II*), less than half a mile north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Merton are set locally. Depending on your street in Wimbledon, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
Close to Cannizaro Park? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. Living in a block of flats near Wimbledon station? Then wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Mark's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
- Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
- Let us know about the wall’s construction
- Think about how often the bed will be used
Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Do not try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.
Think about the route into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so let us know about narrow stairs or a small lift.
Pricing wall beds in Wimbledon
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The internal fittings
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Helping us understand the room
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Approximate measurements of the space
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
What wall beds can’t fix
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Building work to make a wall sound
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
- Making good the walls after other work
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

How it is made
Shelves
We size each shelf for its span and load.
Birch plywood
Shelves beside a wall bed often carry books, and birch plywood helps them resist sagging.
What happens on fitting day
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
- A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
- The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
- We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.
Preparing the room
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
