Fitted home offices in Cannon Hill: what you get

Landings and the space under the eaves can also take a desk. A desk under a sloping ceiling needs careful planning so you can sit and stand comfortably. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. At the design visit in Cannon Hill, we’ll see what fits. If you’re living with a desk in the wrong light and no way to put work away, that’s what home offices are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Cannon Hill, if the loft has been converted, the space under the eaves can take a desk and storage. For lofts, we work in rooms already converted or boarded. Or a desk can sit in an alcove or a bay.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room and the home it’s in.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and talk through the design.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are brought in, joined and scribed to the walls, ready for work.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Working from home in Cannon Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Cannon Hill were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 61%) and before 1919 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. 9 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Cannon Hill. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Merton included. Vans bringing furniture to Cannon Hill fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.

For a flat near South Merton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Southside House, about 1.2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Cannon Hill is about 2 miles north of Wimbledon, in the London Borough of Merton. From period terraces to newer flats in Cannon Hill, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We cover places right across Merton, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Postcode districts we cover here for fitted home offices: SW20, SM4 and KT3. Why people ask for fitted home offices in Cannon Hill

An alcove, a landing or a space under the eaves can often take a desk. Standard desks seldom fit an alcove or a slope. A desk made for the space puts it to good use.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • No way to put work away
  • Working at the kitchen table
  • Wires with no tidy route
  • Shelving that bows under the load

If you live in a period home close to St James Merton, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.

  • Will the quote be in writing?

Questions from Cannon Hill

Is parking a problem for fitting in Cannon Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Is Cannon Hill in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes, Cannon Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Merton and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. We can agree where sockets should go when we visit.

How much does a fitted home office cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The mix of desk, shelving, drawers and doors, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Why bespoke in Cannon Hill?

Bespoke furniture lets the desk, shelves and cupboards be planned together. Separate off-the-shelf pieces seldom match in height or depth. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Why us?

  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Every quote follows a design visit

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Think about the space you need to push back
  • Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
  • Note how many files and books you need to store
  • Look at the window and where the light falls

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It’s worth keeping a record of the paint colour. If anything isn’t right with the furniture, get in touch through our contact form and we’ll talk it through.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us.
