Flats, blocks and rented homes
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
Wall beds in Forestdale: what you get
A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and is lowered again at night. It lets one room do two jobs, like a spare room that is also a study. We make the cabinet for your room and paint it in a colour you choose. Most enquiries start with shelves or a desk around the bed and a guest room that sits empty most of the time, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Around Forestdale, where many homes date from the post-war decades, the bedroom may be modest in size but regular in shape. Fitted furniture can make good use of every wall, planned around the space you need in front. Walls of that age can be harder to drill than plaster on brick, so the right fixings matter.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How we price wall beds
Several things affect the price:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The overall size of the piece
- How square the room is
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Helping us understand the room
These details help when you contact us:
- How you want to use the space
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fixing into concrete takes a heavy-duty drill and makes some noise, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. Fitting day is planned around any building rules on noisy work. Dust is kept down and cleared as we go.
- To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
- At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
- We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Starting with a design visit

Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
FAQs: wall beds in Forestdale
Do you cover homes near Sanderstead station?
Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Forestdale?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Is a wall bed safe?
Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. We fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.
