Wall beds designed for your room

About our wall beds in Coombe

You need room in front of the cabinet to lower the bed, and that shapes the design. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. If you are living with room for a desk and a guest bed and a hobby room with a bed for guests, that is what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Many homes around Coombe date from the post-war decades. Post-war bedrooms tend to be simple shapes, so fitted furniture can run cleanly across a wall. Some have a built-in cupboard over the stairs already, which can be opened up or reworked. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.

Shelves

Shelves can go above or beside the bed cabinet for books, boxes or display.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so if neighbours are close, a note before fitting day can help. Fitting day is planned around any building rules on noisy work. We tidy as we go.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The cabinet is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Getting a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Common questions about wall beds

I live near South Croydon station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

I live in a flat in Coombe. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

What happens during the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes, that’s a common request. A desk beside the bed suits a room that’s an office by day, while new sockets are for your electrician.

How much space does a wall bed need?

It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

We check that during the design visit. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Check there is room for the bed to fold down
  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Bedrooms in Coombe: local notes

About 43% of the homes in the streets around Coombe went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 36% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Coombe, Historic England’s list includes Lodge to Combe House (st Margaret's School) (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Coombe House (st Margaret's School) (Grade II), under half a mile west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in Coombe joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Close to Addington Hills? Wall beds are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If you live in a flat close to South Croydon station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Addington Palace, about 1.3 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.
