Wall beds for your home in Broad Green

Wall beds in Broad Green: what you get

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and a bed that’s used a few times a year takes most of the floor. A wall bed gives that floor back during the day, ready for work, exercise or play. When guests come, the bed folds down. Typical reasons to get in touch are room for a desk and a guest bed and a studio that works by day and night, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Whether your home in Broad Green is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, wall beds are designed for the room as it is. On an external wall, ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps keep condensation away. The inside layout is planned around what you actually store.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near West Croydon station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Is Broad Green in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, Broad Green is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the design. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

What does a wall bed cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Wall beds in Broad Green: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Broad Green were built before 1919 (about 38%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Broad Green, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Broad Green is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For families living near Elmwood Infant School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Near listed buildings like West Croydon United Reformed Church, under half a mile west of the centre of Broad Green, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

We can hand paint the cabinet in your home, once it is fitted. Marks are easy to touch in.

Birch plywood

Shelving around the bed needs to stay straight, and birch plywood helps.

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan wall beds. They help whatever the room:

  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall
  • Think about how often the bed will be used

The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. The bed needs room to fold down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

Is it time for wall beds?

Some people are tired of sofa beds. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A bed that fills a little-used room

For an older house near Church of St Saviour, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift not just the room, so wall beds arrive in sections that fit through. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. First, you let us know about the space.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

What we don’t do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Electrical work for reading lights

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
