Wall beds designed for your room

Is bespoke worth it?

Sofa beds cost less and need no fixing, which suits some homes. With a wall bed you get a proper bed and an empty floor by day, which can make a small room usable. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

How we make wall beds for Thornton Heath

Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again, ready for work, exercise or play. When guests come, the bed folds down. If your home has a studio that works by day and night and storage built around a fold-down bed, that is what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Thornton Heath built before 1919, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Common questions about wall beds

Is Thornton Heath in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Thornton Heath included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.

Can you fit wall beds to the uneven walls of an older house in Thornton Heath?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

How much does a wall bed cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we quote once we have seen the room. To get started, use our contact form.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it is useful to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinet is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Do you need wall beds in Thornton Heath?

A flexible room is useful as needs change. A playroom, a study or a hobby room can still have a bed for visitors when it is needed.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day

For a family home near Winterbourne Junior Girls' School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What it costs

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The number of doors and drawers

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you get in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Examples of the look you are after

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

Wall beds for homes in Thornton Heath

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Thornton Heath were built before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Thornton Heath include Church of St Stephen (Grade II), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Croydon included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Thornton Heath. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

If you live near Grangewood Park, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 2.4 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
