About our wall beds in Lower Morden

Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and a bed that’s used a few times a year takes most of the floor. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again for a desk, a hobby or just space. When guests come, the bed folds down. Typical reasons to get in touch are a bed that fills a little-used room and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Lower Morden, bedrooms are often simple shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the wall bed we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Why bespoke in Lower Morden?

Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. A bespoke cabinet can run the full width and height and fill the rest of the wall with storage. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Lower Morden

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Lower Morden were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 85%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 6%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. The centre of Lower Morden is within about a quarter of a mile of the Upper Morden Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Merton sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

If your children go to Aragon Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live near Cannon Hill Common, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is one of the older houses near St Martin's, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Your questions about wall beds in Lower Morden

Does a conservation area in or near Lower Morden affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to St Helier station?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, and we look at this when we measure.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
